From its beginning, Grupo Jaragua has been involved in numerous initiatives aimed at preserving biodiversity and the environment. In fact, many of these activities, because of the urgency they often require, use up a large part of Grupo Jaragua's staff. Currently, Grupo Jaragua is especially involved with the Coalition for the Defense of Protected Areas, formed in April of 2004 to oppose the degradation of the national protected area system. The system is threatened by the Protected Area Law submitted at that time to the Dominican Republic's Senate and Congress, and approved in August of 2004, despite widespread opposition from many sectors of Dominican Society. Currently, Grupo presides the Coalition, and last September coordinated with all other Coalition members the submission of a motion of appeal to the Dominican Republic's Supreme Court, claiming the illegality of this Law under a number of concepts. Children's Summer Camp Every year, starting in 199?, Grupo Jaragua organizes a children's summer camp in Oviedo, Pedernales. The theme of the camp is nature preservation. Many companies and individual donors contribute every year to making it possible every year, through their in-kind and monetary donations (including working for free). The camp is a big hit among the children of Oviedo. In 2004, over one hundred kids from Oviedo attended. Grupo Jaragua is interested in that local people benefit from Jaragua's Natural Park's resources in a sustainable manner, particularly through nature tourism. To this end, we are training local youths as nature guides. The training program includes talks and trips that show them the most important natural, historic, and cultural resources of the area.
